My Current Obsession

Last week I used a vintage photo from the collection of Leigh Viner.   I had never heard of her before, but now I am a huge fan!

Her fashion illustrations are incredible and very affordable.  I’m also in love with her vintage photographs.  Basically what I’m saying is, Check her out!

These four are my favorites and now I need to decide.  Suggestions for me?

Lovely Links

Now this is my kind of DIY!

It’s sunny outside, who has time to look at 30 great links?  Here are just a few to keep you entertained…

This is about the cutest thing ever to do with thumbtacks.  You, Me, Oui!

I just finished reading Bringing Up Bebe.  Have you read it yet?  I now know how to raise a French child.  It was a super great read.  I learned a few things and I will leave a few things…

Apparently Seattle is rated the #1 city for hipsters according to Travel & Leisure magazine.  Ughh, I guess I have to stop wearing my Uggs to the grocery store and start acting a little hipper.

13 Steps To Getting Pregnant, The Sparkly Self Love Way

This weekend I found myself telling my “gettin’ knocked up” story for about the millionth time.  It’s not that my story is that fascinating, it’s just that we as women are impatient and it’s good to hear other stories to know that we are normal.   It’s a funny thing, we decide that we want to get pregnant, and if we aren’t pregnant within a month of making that decision we decide that there is something wrong with us.  We get stressed out, insecure and feel inadequate.  Yuck.

I had just turned 38 when I decided to get pregnant.  I went to my beloved OB/GYN to get checked out and get the “all clear” that I thought I needed.  She thought my FSH numbers were not quite good enough so she told me I would have to do a Clomid challenge test to find out more.  All I knew about Clomid was that you took it as part of IVF and it made you feel awful.  I told my doctor that I didn’t want to put my body through that just to find out if I was fertile.  Her response to that was basically, “Good luck lady, you probably can’t get pregnant anyways, and you obviously don’t care enough to find out if you can or not.”

I drove home in tears.  I was now convinced that I was infertile  and I hadn’t even started trying yet!  The minute I got home I went to find my tattered copy of the Lady Bible (aka Women’s Bodies Women’s Wisdom) to see what Dr. Northrup would tell me in this situation.  Positive words and relief, not what I got from the doctor I had been going to for 15 years!  The next day I made an appointment with a naturopath that specialized in fertility.  She told me an entirely different story that made feel happy and hopeful.

It did take us another year to get pregnant, and I spent that year studying the best of the best of how to get pregnant.  My friends that are getting pregnant always want my master list, so I thought perhaps there were others out there that could be helped as well.  So here goes…

❤ If you don’t like what your doctor has to say and she/he doesn’t make you feel positive and hopeful then find another doctor.

❤ If you have been trying for a while and are over 35 then I highly recommend that you read Inconceivable.  This woman’s story is so inspirational.  I have given it to so many friends that were stuck in despair and it pulled them right out of it.

The Infertility Cure and Making Babies are good reads for anyone wanting to get pregnant.  You don’t need to buy any other books because these two cover everything.

❤ In a perfect world you would start following the advice of these books 3 months before you even start trying.  The healthier you are, the healthier the baby will be!

❤ Acupuncture rules for making babies!  If you are in Seattle then you should run as fast as you can to Janet Michel.  A Google search for fertility acupuncture should bring up many choices in your area.

❤ Mayan Abdominal Massage is a not so well known, but very relaxing treat that will help with fertility.  Sarah Lawrence (also in Seattle) knows more about fertility than anyone I have ever met.  Once again, a Google search will help you locate someone in your area.

❤ The Clearblue Fertlity Monitor is the expensive little toy that really works.  I have loaned mine out to multiple friends that have all gotten lucky with it.  Borrow one from a friend if you can or just suck it up and buy one.  It’s worth it.

❤ A friend recommended I try FertiliTea and it became part of my protocol.  I have no idea if it did anything, but it tasted good and I got pregnant.  So who knows!

FertilAid for Women and FertilAid for Men, these are supplements that my “good doctor” recommended.  Yeah, let’s not forget that there is a Man in this equation and his little swimmers need to be as healthy and strong as possible!

Pre-Seed Lubricant is a must.  Remember those little swimmers?  They don’t like KY Jelly or any other lubricant.

❤ My friend Michele Morgan is an incredible psychic, she had me write a letter to my baby to be, telling him/her about the loving family that was waiting for them.  I’ll admit, I felt a little silly writing the letter at the time, but I did it anyways.  I recently found the letter and it made me cry it was so sweet, I will definitely save it and give it to Johnny when he is older and can properly make fun of me.

❤ Treat yourself like the queen that you are.  Take baths, get massages, get pedicures, read romance novels, go to matinees, go for long walks on sunny days.  Make lists of the things that make you happy, then go out and do them!

❤ Have really good sex!

This could easily be a 10 part blog series on how to get pregnant, but I wanted to give you the quick & dirty cheat sheet on what you might want to get started with.  Of course I can’t guarantee that any of these things will work for you, but they sure worked for me!

Other important topics such as nutrition, exercise, meditation and more are all beautifully covered in the books mentioned above.  Please read them!

There is a really great site that carries everything and their prices are the same and sometimes better than Amazon, it’s good to compare!  Click here to go to getting pregnant shopping heaven…

Lovely Links

I have to say, reading all of your comments this week about Bikini Summer have been so amazing.  I will be picking the winners later today, so get on over and check it out if you haven’t already entered to win!  Anyhoo, here are some of my lovely findings this week…

Talk about beautiful and excessive!  The Louis Vuitton train supposedly cost 8 million dollars!

Um hello, awesomely cute hairstyle!

I loved this article on how to raise respectful boys.

The perfect summary of The Art Of Self Confidence.  Pink hair is only an option!

My newest iPhone case obsession.  Love the tail…

Speaking of iPhones, this article is a must read from Gala Darling about how we are making ourselves targets for predators.  Scary but necessary read!

Very wise words from Brian McGreevy:
If you are good, and patient, you will eventually have a career. This is a categorical truth. Being a novelist and being a Hollywood screenwriter are both, statistically speaking, spectacularly unlikely, and yet half the contacts in my phone are either one or the other.

Gorgeous, sparkly, oddly geological street art!

Thoughts on comparison.

I love Joy’s daily uniform.

Bikini Summer 2012: Lesson Eleven

I had a whole lesson planned out for today, but I completely scrapped it when I got an email from Kris Carr announcing the free online premiere of Hungry For Change, by the same people that did Foodmatters (which is awesome!).

There are so many movies out right now about healthy eating, vegan eating, eating organic farm fresh food, etc…But this is the first film that has taken it to the topic of weight loss, and what we are doing to our bodies and our weight with the food we put into our mouths and our kids mouths.  Sometimes it takes seeing a movie to make it all sink in…

Hungry For Change will be free to watch online for another 3 days, then after that you will have to buy it or wait for it to come out on DVD.  Please Please Please watch it now while it’s free!

The description of visualizations and weight loss was my biggest takeaway from the movie.  What was yours?

Lesson Twelve will be our final exam!  Prizes galore!!!

Bikini Summer 2012: Lesson Ten

Sugar.

Beautiful, wonderful, comforting, sweet sugar.

In a perfect world I would ask you to give up sugar.  Sugar is pure evil.  Here is a great article that will it explain it to you perfectly if you don’t believe me.

I’m not going to ask you to give up sugar though.  That would be mean.

I am going to ask you to start eating sugar with style and grace though.  The French have it down when it comes to eating sugar.  Try a few of these tips out and see what feels good to you.  If it doesn’t feel good then don’t do it!

  • Sit down and enjoy your dessert.  Stop absentmindedly throwing bites of birthday cake in your mouth, sit down and enjoy a piece and be done with it.
  • If you aren’t going to make it yourself, then make sure you are buying the absolute best dessert that is available.  Don’t buy a convenience store piece of banana bread when there is a bakery next door.
  • Eat the dessert that you really, really want.  If you want chocolate cake and the restaurant you are at only has cheesecake, then hold out til you get the chocolate cake.  If you are going to eat sugar then it should be what you want!
  • Plan for your dessert.  Decide how many days a week you are going to eat it and plan for it.

I find it so sad that when I was a kid sugar was considered to be a treat.  Now it is a convenience.  It is easier to find a bottle of soda in a gas station than a bottle of water!  The truth is that we have no idea how much sugar we are eating…

I LOVE that while I was writing this lesson I checked Facebook (I need lessons on time management!), and I saw this status update from a friend…

“22 days sugar free and feeling quite smug beotches”

then, amidst all the congratulations comments she wrote:

“After the first week or so you just feel more determined. And I found myself much more aware of how other foods make me feel. After 3 weeks I seem to eat less and other foods that are not great don’t seem as appealing. Why have toast without jam, etc. Also, most excitingly, my muscles feel better and I have had almost no muscle spasms in 3weeks!”

I used to be a major sugar addict, eating it 2-3 times a day.  Now I have a couple pieces of dark chocolate every night and I am good.  It was hard at first but it really does get easier after a few days!

So what can you do to make your sugar consumption a little more lovely?
